Olympic silver medalists Nancy Kerrigan and Paul Wylie will lace up their skates to perform with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra at the annual Sealy/FOX8 Holiday Concert in Greensboro on Dec. 18.
Kerrigan won the silver medal in the 1994 Olympics and the bronze medal in the 1992 games. Wylie won silver in 1992.
The Greensboro concert is the second of two in the Sealy/FOX8 Holiday Concert series sponsored by Old Dominion Freight Line and 99.5 WMAG. On Dec. 17, the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony will perform at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Admission and parking to both concerts are free with canned food donations. Every can of food that is collected will go to benefit The Salvation Armies throughout the Piedmont. Doors to both performances open at 6 p.m. and the concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.
Kerrigan and Wylie's appearances are being made possible by the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which are coming to Greensboro in January 2011.
Critically acclaimed singer Tony Griffey will be joining the symphonies at both concerts again this year. Griffey, a High Point native, has won two Grammy Awards and has received recognition for his performances on stages around the world.
"The Salvation Army is able to help feed thousands of hungry families right here in the Piedmont because of the Sealy/FOX8 Holiday Concerts," said Captain Tony Perez of The Salvation Army of High Point. "We would not be able to serve the numbers that we do if it were not for this wonderful concert series."
"We are thrilled that Nancy Kerrigan is going to skate at the Greensboro Sealy/FOX8 Holiday Concert," said Karen Adams, pPresident and general manager of FOX8. "Our hope is more people will come, bringing more cans of food, enabling The Salvation Army to help more families."
The concerts are designed to be a fun, family event filled with wonderful holiday music. FOX8 anchors Neill McNeill and Julie Luck will host both concerts along with Bill Flynn of 99.5 WMAG. Last year, the concert series collected 643,637 cans of food for The Salvation Army in eight Piedmont counties.
