What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in men. Known risk factors include age, race and family history:

African-American men have a higher incidence of prostate cancer than Caucasian or Asian men in the U.S. Many physicians, as well as the American Cancer Society, recommend that all men over the age of 40 have a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test regularly.

Prostate Cancer Treatments

There are numerous treatment options for prostate cancer once a physician makes definitive diagnosis. Each treatment has benefits and drawbacks. Together, patients and their physicians need to weigh all the factors as they search for the best treatment option. Age, Gleason score (measures the cancers aggressiveness), PSA, lifestyle and quality of life issues all play a very important role in identifying the optimal treatment.

Testosterone Deficiency

Testopel® is the only FDA approved implantable testosterone pellet. Administered in a simple office-based procedure every three to six months, Testopel® is indicated for the treatment of men with conditions associated with deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone.

Testosterone deficiency/male hypogonadism: The signs and symptoms of low testosterone in men include erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, mood disturbances such as depression, loss of muscle mass, osteoporosis, and increase in body fat. Many of these signs and symptoms were previously believed to be part of the normal aging process, however, recently treatment of low testosterone in men has been shown to provide long-term physical and mental improvement. Diagnosis is confirmed with a blood test for testosterone levels. Treatment includes topical gels such as Androgel and Testim, skin patches(Androderm), buccal patches(Striant), and monthly injections such as depotestosterone. The newest treatment is Testopel which is a 6 month injectable pellet.

Alamance Impotence Clinic

What is Impotence?

Impotence is the inability to achieve or maintain an adequate erection for sexual intercourse. Many men become sexually impotent but do not admit this to themselves. Once the problem is recognized and treated, most men can resume regular sexual activity. There are many causes for impotence and we attempt to determine what the causes are in each situation. Common causes are diabetes, hardening of the arteries, prior cancer surgery, hormone problems, and psychological disorders. Impotence can even be a side effect of some common medications.

How is Impotence Evaluated?

Your doctor will ask you questions about your medical history and will perform a physical examination. He may order blood tests, x-rays, sleep tests, or penile blood flow studies.

How is Impotence Treated?

Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment may vary from medical or surgical options. Medical therapies include changing current medications that you are taking, hormone replacement therapy, self-injection therapy, or vacuum devices. Surgical options include vascular surgery, penile implants, or reconstructive surgery.

Confidentiality

We respect the confidential nature of your medical records and will furnish them to no one except yourself unless you request otherwise.

Insurance and Billing

Most insurance plans will cover the diagnosis and treatment of impotence. If this is a concern to you, please check with your insurance company prior to beginning an evaluation. We will assist you in any way possible to be sure that your claims are properly handled.
