REIDSVILLE, N.C. - A Reidsville photographer who has worked in Haiti is using his art to try and help the recovery effort there.

It's been over 24 hours since Chris Matthews has heard from his fellow relief workers in Haiti. Facebook is the only way he can get messages after Tuesday's earthquake.

"My first response was, 'holy cow!' We know where that is, how close the palace is to the main facility." Matthews said.

Matthews has spent a lot of time working in Haiti, his most recent trip in 2008. Matthews owns Heirloom Photography and took photos of Haitian children while working there. He says the photos capture the joyful nature of the children despite their living conditions.

"Here are kids in a country, they have no idea where they're going next. When they're going to eat they're happy. You don't get to see that very often." Matthews said.

Matthews calls his photography "art with a mission" and he has partnered with the Hearts of Haiti, an organization that provides care for disable children.

"As a business person i feel it's important to give back, so w was looking for a way to do that." Matthews said.

Matthews says none of the Hearts of Haiti children were injured during the earthquake, but he is saddened by the upcoming rebuilding process.

"They are a strong people. They are people looking for a hand-up, not a handout." Matthews said.

Matthews says a portion of his art sales will benefit Hearts of Haiti.
