GREENSBORO, N.C.—
Police are still trying to determine what caused a six-vehicle accident that killed one and injured several others Sunday evening.Officers said six vehicles, including a tractor trailer, were involved in the accident, which happened around 6:10 p.m. and closed all eastbound lanes of I-40 at the High Point Road exit.
Police said 15-year-old Darryl Baucum, of Winston-Salem, was riding in one of the vehicles and died as a result of his injures. Officers said 9 people were taken to Moses Cone Hospital with injuries.
As of 10 a.m. Monday, 3 people are still at Moses Cone Hospital, one listed in critical condition. Police said the critically injured patient is the 11-year-old brother of the Darryl Baucum.
Neither his name nor the names of other victims were released.
Trina Demonbreun says she was four cars behind the tractor trailer involved when the accident happened.
"I just looked and all of a sudden I see cars, break lights, smoke -- a car flipped, landed against the guard rail to my left. I was in the same lane as the semi was, four car lengths behind it. It happened so fast. It was within seconds." Demonbreun said.
On Monday afternoon, police said the driver of the tractor trailer was at fault in the crash and charges could be filed against him.
Police said all lanes of I-40 were reopened at 9:45 p.m. DOT officials had set up a detour using I-73 south to I-85 north before returning to I-40.
Demonbreun said she and her husband worried that their four children who were in the car with them when the accident happened would be scarred by seeing the crash scene. But she said many people tried to help victims on the scene.
"God bless Greensboro because I wanted to stop, pull over. There were people pulled over running to help the person on the ground. You see things on the news every day where people walk by people, but this is one time I can tell you Greensboro didn't walk by anyone, they got out and helped this man." Demonbreun said.
