In the Greensboro mayoral race, Republican challenger Bill Knight has unseated Democratic incumbent Yvonne Johnson, according to unofficial results.

With all 106 precincts reporting, Knight had garnered nearly 1,000 votes more than Johnson.

Knight, 70, is a retired certified accountant who ran for city council two years ago and lost. Johnson has only been mayor for one term, but prior to being elected to that office, she served on the city council for seven terms.

Voters in Greensboro also passed a $20 million bond to renovate and add exhibits to the city's Natural Science Center. The referendum passed with 61 percent of the vote.

The science center will use the money to build more education exhibits, pay for a new aviary and new aquarium, and make upgrades to several existing exhibits. The project will be built in phases and is expected to take about seven to 10 years to complete.

In the city council race, newcomer Danny Thompson (17%), former city councilmember Nancy Barakat Vaughan (21%) and incumbent Robbie Perkins (18%) all won at-large seats with all precincts reporting.

In District 1, incumbent T. Dianne Bellamy-Small defeated Luther T. Falls Jr. In District 3, incumbent Zack Matheny defeated George Hartzman, and in District 5, incumbent Trudy Wade easily defeated Art Boyett, 71 percent to 29 percent.

In District 4, current at-large councilmember Mary Rakestraw won the seat being vacated by councilmember Mike Barber. In District 2, Jim Kee easily defeated Nettie Lewis Coad for the seat being vacated by Goldie Wells.

Winston-Salem Races

In Winston-Salem, Mayor Allen Joines ran unopposed.

North Ward: D.D. Adams defeated John Hopkins with all precincts reporting.

Northeast Ward: Vivian Burke defeated Claudia Shivers with all precincts reporting.

Northwest Ward: Wanda Merschel defeated Peter Sorensen with all precincts reporting.

Southeast Ward: James Taylor defeated Chuck Woolard with all precincts reporting.

Southwest Ward: Dan Besse defeated Ted Shipley with all precincts reporting.

Voters in the town of Stokesdale approved the sale of mixed drinks and an ABC store.

East Bend Bond Referendums Results

Voters in East Bend approved the sale of malt beverages and mixed drinks.

Mayoral Races

Ronnie K. Wall won the Burlington mayoral race, according to unofficial results.

In Mount Airy, Deborah Cochran defeated Teresa Lewis for mayor.

In the race for mayor of Thomasville, Joe Bennett held a commanding lead with five of nine precincts reporting. Bennett had 59 percent of the vote.

In Lexington, John T. Walser appeared poised to win the mayor race. With seven of eight precincts reporting, Walser had 70 percent of the vote.
