This time on Road Rules, a brief review of some of the road projects North Carolina will be seeing from the first installment of the federal economic stimulus package.
Gov Perdue says she has 70 highway and bridge projects that are what they call "shovel ready." That means everything is ready except for the funding and crews can be on scene and working between now and June. That was one of the requirements to get the money.
So what are we looking at? Starting in the east:
Alamance County will be getting 18 Million dollars to finish widening Mebane Street from Huffman Mill Rd to Chapel Hill Rd. in Burlington.
Alamance and Guilford Counties will share 10 Million dollars to resurface I-40/85 from Rock Creek Dairy Rd to University Dr. where the new Alamance Crossing is located. That will start in May.
Guilford County will also be getting 4 Million to pour concrete on I-85 between Groometown Rd and The 85/29/70 split to High Point. That will start in June.
Rockingham County will receive 4 Million to rehab the stretch of Highway 29 from the Guilford County line to Troublesome Creek. Crews should be on the job there by June.
In Forsyth County, we're getting 2 Million for rehab on I-40 between Highway 311 and Clemmonsville Rd. That one will begin in April.
And Forsyth and Stokes Counties will share 21 Million dollars to widen Tobaccoville Rd from the RJR entrance on over the Kirby Rd, including a new interchange at Highway 52. That project is already underway.
And a reminder, these might not be the most important projects out there, but these are the ones that can be underway by June. The idea is to get money flowing and create or keep jobs. Another 300 to 400 Million will be coming from Washington in a few months for additional projects.
And some good news for everyone opposed to toll roads. The Governor says she is trying to get yet another 300 Million out of Washington to build a new Yadkin River bridge.
