ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. - An elderly man who disappeared from his Mebane home a week ago has been found dead, according to the Alamance County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said a couple of hunters found the car belonging to 87-year-old Hugh Clark in a thickly wooded, rural area off a logging road in Montgomery County on Friday afternoon.

Investigators at the scene located Clark's body. It's believed he had been dead for about a week.

"If it weren't for the Lord and the love of God, I couldn't make it," said Clark's wife, Thelma, moments before she learned her husband would not be coming home.

Clark left his Trollingwood Rd. home the afternoon of Oct. 23 driving a gold 1997 Lincoln Town Car. He told family members he was going out to get a tuneup and oil change.

At 7 p.m., his family reported him missing.

For a week, members of the Clark family have held on to their faith in hope that the man they loved would be found safe. With the help of community members and volunteers with N.C. Search and Rescue, they spent countless hours looking for the World War II veteran who had early signs of dementia.

Detectives received several reports from people who thought they saw Clark that afternoon, but sightings had dried up since then.

The sheriff's office said preliminary investigations show no indication of foul play.

"We want everyone to know how grateful we are," said Cindy Grissom, Clark's daughter. "We'll never know how much they've done for us. I thank them all."
