Appeal Filed in Forsyth Prayer Ruling
Attorneys representing Forsyth County filed an appeal Wednesday of a district court decision that prevents the county Board of Commissioners from opening public meetings with deity-specific prayer.

The Alliance Defense Fund, a legal alliance of Christian attorneys and organizations that is representing the county, filed the appeal electronically Wednesday night and will now begin preparing briefs that the appellate judges are expected to ask for in the future.

On Monday night, with a large crowd of supporters present, the commissioners voted 4-3 to appeal a judge's ruling that banned prayer before meetings that mentions particular deities. Last month, a judge ruled in favor of the ACLU, which had filed a lawsuit claiming prayers that mention Jesus or other specific deities before a government meeting were unconstitutional.

Mike Johnson, an attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund, said he expects it to take several months before a date for oral arguments in the case to be set.
