WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—
A third-year English teacher at Atkins High School was arrested and charged Thursday with having an illegal sexual relationship with a student.Authorities charged Amy Elizabeth Yarbrough, 32, of 2050 Brian Center Ct., with seven counts of sexual activity with a student and three counts of taking indecent liberties with a student. All of the charges are felonies.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, on Wednesday, a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools administrator contacted the sheriff's office to report of an allegation of an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student at Atkins.
Yarbrough, an English teacher at the School of Computer Technology at Atkins High School, was arrested Thursday night, the school system said in a news release.
Superintendent Don Martin suspended her without pay and will recommend to the school board she be dismissed.
Yarbrough was jailed under a $115,000 secured bond pending a preliminary hearing Jan. 8.
The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.
The school system has scheduled a 3 p.m. news conference to take questions about Yarbrough and the arrest.
