The man suspected of robbing a Clemmons bank and fleeing in a stolen taxi cab was arrested by deputies in New Hanover County late Friday, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said.

John Joseph Barnocky, 33, of Hickory, was arrested during an unrelated investigation. He was jailed under a $400,000 secured bond.

In connection with the robbery Wednesday of the SunTrust branch on Lewisville-Clemmons Rd., Barnocky is charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony motor vehicle theft, assault on a government official and resisting arrest.

Deputies in Forsyth County said Barnocky hailed a taxi at the Pizza Hut on Lewisville-Clemmons Rd. and, before going anywhere, told cab driver Tom Jennings he needed to run an errand. Barnocky then ran a few businesses down to a SunTrust branch.

Witnesses said Barnocky showed a gun to a teller during the robbery and was handed money, but an undercover deputy who was inside the bank chased him out.

Deputies said Barnocky ran back to the waiting cab and hopped in the back seat, but before the car could pull away, the undercover officer pulled his gun out and stopped him. The cab driver got out of the car while the two men struggled.

Deputies located the cab late Wednesday afternoon off Westgate Center Dr., near Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem.
