Davidson Man Charged with Shooting Neighbor's Dog

A Winston-Salem man was charged with cruelty to animals after a dog owner reported his dog had been shot twice Sunday.

According to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to 210 Half-Wright Rd. and found the homeowner's dog had been shot. A trail of blood led deputies to nearby 470 Crotts Ln., where Herman Gregory Hine, 51, was confronted.

According to the sheriff's office, Hine initially denied seeing or shooting a dog, telling investigators he could not own a gun because he was a convicted felon.

Detectives then obtained a search warrant for weapons and found several hand guns and long guns in a gun safe in Hine's home, the sheriff's office said.

Hine then confessed to shooting the dog and showed investigators the gun he had used, the sheriff's office said.

During the search, investigators also found five marijuana plants in an outbuilding on Hine's property.

Hine was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, manufacturing marijuana and felony cruelty to animals. He was jailed under a $20,000 bond.

Teresa Lynn Hine, also of 470 Crotts Ln., was charged with manufacturing marijuana and jailed under a $5,000 bond.

Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court Dec. 9.
