WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
A new partnership between the Forsyth County Humane Society and Meals on Wheels will allow volunteers to deliver pet food, in addition to human food, to seniors with pets who are unable to travel to buy groceries or prepare their own food.
Providing food for pets has been an informal service provided by Meals volunteers for awhile.
"We have, over the years, seen a need with our elderly that we serve that they don't have the means to get out and get their pets some food," explained Linda Kearsley, the nutrition services director for Meals on Wheels. "And sometimes the volunteers will go out and purchase food for their pets because they see that there's a need."
Louise Pollard, who often takes her three dogs with her on her delivery route, has purchased food for her clients' pets in the past.
"You realize if they need a meal, so do their pets," she said. "And you don't want them to give their meal to their pets or not have food for their pets."
But now the partnership with the Forsyth Humane Society has formalized Meals on Wheels ability to provide for four-legged clients. The humane society will deliver pet food to Meals every couple of weeks, Kearsley said.
