WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
A new initiative called Nutz About Downtown aims to lure residents downtown and to a performance of The Nutcracker in order to take advantage of holiday savings at participating retailers and restaurants.
The program, organized by Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, is being produced in conjunction with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts' production of The Nutracker and runs from Nov. 24 through Dec. 31.
"Downtown Winston has a lot to offer," said Ric Williams of Separk Music. "People are used to going to strip centers and malls, and they have really forgotten the people down here."
Between now and the end of the year, nearly 40 stores and restaurants downtown are offering discounts and freebies to anyone who walks through the doors. In addition, those same shops and eateries also offering a special discount or deal to people who go see The Nutcracker and present a ticket stub or playbill.
The Nutcracker is showing at the Stevens Center December 5-13.
The deals range from 10 and 20 percent off certain items to buy-one, get-one free on some goods. To get the deals, shoppers have to mention the Nutz About Downtown campaign.
"Downtown has changed in the last couple of years, and we want them to come downtown and participate in the new options we have downtown," said Justin Gomez, of Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership.
"Some people still have that idea that they are not quite ready yet to try downtown as part of that dining place or that shopping place," said Michael Johnson of Noma's Urban Bar and Grill, which is participating by offering specially priced items on the menu. "We really feel like like this could be a new epicenter for people to shop and dine and have things to do downtown."
