HIGH POINT, N.C. - An approximately 80-foot length of a cement roof cap fell to the sidewalk from a building on East Russell Ave. on Friday night.

No one was injured by the falling 6" by 12" cement chunks. It's unclear why the roof cap fell.

According to High Point Fire Chief R.L. Way, the building at 325 East Russell Ave. is unoccupied, but the county was in the process of remodeling it for us by Guilford County Department of Social Services.

"It's minor until it falls on somebody, so we're just taking all necessary precautions to prevent anything from happening," said Way. "If we're going to err, we're going to err on the positive side."

Police closed Russell Ave. between Manning and Centennial streets.

Crews arrived Friday night to clean up the area and inspect the building for weaknesses that may pose a threat to public safety.
