RANDLEMAN, N.C.—
Anglers and boaters will soon have a new marina and fishing pier to enjoy once the Randleman Regional Reservoir in northern Randolph County opens March 3.The shelves at Groceries and Such in Randleman are stocked with bait, but owner Darlene Farmer is hoping she'll boost her bottom line in March once the reservoir opens for the first time.
"People are really excited about the Randleman dam opening up for the fishing." Farmer said.
Water Authority board member Arnold Koonce says the lake will be an important drinking water source for people in Randolph and Guilford counties, but people will still be able to use the lake for recreation.
Those wishing to use the fishing pier will have to pay $2 and $15 or more to use a motorboat. Only 100 boats will be allowed on the lake at a time.
In an effort to keep drinking water clean, a bridge on N.C. Highway 62 that goes over the lake will be a cut-off for boaters. Koonce says there are other limitations to ensure that drinking water remains clean.
"The lake has a 200 foot buffer around it that belongs to the water authority for environmental reasons and wanting to keep the water clear and unpolluted as possible." said Koonce.
Other limitations include:
No alcoholic beverages on lake or adjoining property.
No motorboats north of N.C. 62 bridge.
No sailboats with masts more than 12 feet high.
No swimming, wading, skiing, personal watercraft, camping, horseback riding or all-terrain vehicles on reservoir property.
Boat operators must be over 16 years old.
No cleaning of fish on reservoir property.
Hunting, trapping or harassing wildlife and/or birds is prohibited.
Picnicking allowed only in designated areas outside the reservoir's protective buffer.
No littering. Trash disposal in assigned areas only.
