Near SEAGROVE, N.C. -
To the naked eye, an empty eight and a half acres outside Seagrove are just another Randolph County field. But to a developer from Cary, the field holds the promise of sun-harnessing cells.
Randolph County planners have already approved the Cary company's zoning request to build a solar farm. In August, the proposal goes before the county commissioners.
"It's not necessarily new technology. It's technology that is starting to be used widespread," explained Hal Johnson, the county's planning director. "We think there will be others throughout North Carolina."
The proposed solar farm near Seagrove wouldn't be Randolph County's first. Last year, the North Carolina Zoo unveiled a new picnic pavilion that also collects the sun's rays.
The Seagrove proposal would dwarf the zoo's solar efforts and create energy out of thin air without creating a lot of fuss.
"It's the type of development that you like to see in a rural environment, because it has no substantial impact on surrounding properties," said Johnson.
The megawatts generated from the solar farm could be sold to Randolph Electric.
