A Yadkin County man who works with a middle school soccer team was arrested Wednesday and charged with soliciting a child in Alamance County.
William Shane Vanhoy, 32, of Hamptonville, faces one count of solicitation of a child by computer to commit an unlawful sex act following a seven-month investigation by the Alamance County Sheriff's Office Computer Crimes and Forensic Investigation Unit.
School officials said Vanhoy serves as a volunteer assistant coach of the Forbush Middle School boys soccer team. Vanhoy also is a coach on a youth soccer team in Yadkin County that's affiliated with the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association.
Yadkin school officials said Vanhoy passed a background check before being clear to work with the soccer team.
"We do a background check. We do them for all our volunteer coaches, and we do them every year," said Yadkin County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim Benfield. "There was one done on this coach before he started and the background check didn't show any problems."
According to the Alamance County Sheriff's Office, the investigation began in March and the alleged solicitation occurred in August.
Detectives with the computer crimes unit said Vanhoy had been chatting online with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl since March, but didn't solicit an unlawful sex act until August.
Deputies in Yadkin County assisted with the arrest of Vanhoy and searched his home. He was taken to Alamance County for processing and jailed under a $5,000 secured bond.
