GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Has this ever happened to you: you're cruising down Wendover Ave., keeping up with the flow of traffic, and suddenly you glance down at the speedometer and notice you're going 60 miles per hour?
You're not the only one.
Greensboro police say the seven-mile stretch of Wendover Ave. between Interstate 40 and North Church St. is one of two "hot spots" for speeders. The other hot spot is a three-mile section of Guilford College Rd. between I-40 and New Garden Rd.
The posted speed limit for most of that section of Wendover is 45 mph, but officers regularly find drivers going 60 mph or higher.
"Because it is a lot of curves on that roadway, a lot of interchanges, sometimes you get speeds in excess of 60 on upwards," explains Officer J.B. Price. "We have clocked 100 miles-an-hour violations."
Price says officers can nab anywhere between three and seven speeders on the section of Guilford College Rd. stretching north from the interstate.
More officers are patrolling these areas during morning and afternoon rush hours, when the chance for an accident increases.
"If you go up to the 55 mile-an-hour range to, say 70 mile-an-hour range, the chance of you being killed in a car crash roughly doubles," says Price.
He attributes the increase in speeding in those areas to new businesses that are bringing in more traffic.
Last month, there were 30 accidents on Wendover Ave. between North Church and I-40, and 10 wrecks on Guilford College between New Garden and I-40, police say.
