Rashad Young took the reigns Friday as the new city manager of Greensboro.

Young will serve as the chief executive officer of the city, charged with providing administrative leadership to staff, carrying out the policies, programs, ordinances and resolutions approved by City Council and overseeing all city operations.

On his first day, Young said his challenge is to learn the area quickly and build relationships with people and leaders. He said economic development and growing the city are some of his more important issues.

Young spoke Friday at Bennett College's groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of several new projects on the campus including a 144-bed residence hall, wellness center and a global learning center.

"What attracted me to Greensboro is there are lots of things to build on and a lot of community assets, and this community is thriving and it's going to grow, and I wanted to be a part of that and get that kind of experience and challenge," he said.

Young said another important issue he wants to work on is the relationship within the police department and the department's relationship with the community.
