GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ameritox, a medication monitoring company, will bring 228 jobs to Greensboro when it opens a new lab and material analysis facility, the company announced Wednesday.

The Baltimore-based company plans to renovate a former RF Micro Devices building on Gallimore Dairy Rd. to house the new facility, which will be staffed by employees ranging from lab technicians to scientists with Ph.D's.

Ameritox said it plans to start recruiting within the next month. Positions will be advertised in local newspapers and online.

The company monitors pain-prescription medications to prevent abuse, addiction and drug-to-drug interactions.

CEO Ancelmo Lopes said the company picked Greensboro for the new lab because of the new FedEx hub and the presence of UPS.

"All of the material we receive to test comes through overnight mail, so having close and easy access to those facilities is important to us," he said.

Lopes said renovations on the building are already underway and are expected to be completed by December.

"Much of the infrastructure we would have to have in a space already exists, so that's giving us a leg up in terms of getting the space redone," he said.

Ameritox was also attracted to the area by the training programs offered by Guilford Technical Community College, UNCG and the BioNetwork Pharmaceutical Center.

Dan Lynch, the president of the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance, said Ameritox is the biggest company that's announced it's expanding in Greensboro this year.

"We think employment's starting to stabilize. We think the manufacturing output is starting to go up a little bit. It's going to be a slow recovery, but we think we are beginning to see the beginning of that recovery," he said.

Ameritox initially applied for county incentives to locate in Guilford County but later withdrew the request, saying the company didn't really need it.
