GREENSBORO N.C.—
This story will likely raise your "ick" factor to 11.Environmentalists are debating the origin of a large organism found in the sewer below Cameron Village shopping center in Raleigh. Some believe it's a collection of slug worms, while others think it's a group of invertebrates usually found in fresh and sea water.
A YouTube video showing the icky mound wallowing through Raleigh's sewer pipes has gone viral, attracting a lot of squeamish, but curious, viewers.
Greensboro water department workers tell FOX8 they see all types of curious and gross things floating around under the city on a fairly frequent basis.
Employees like Charles Pegram said they've been sending video cameras down into sewer pipes for many years.
"(Police have) called us to go lower a camera to go up in a pipe to see if we can find a weapon," Pegram said. While they've come across roaches, rats and snakes, nothing has yet compared to Raleigh's sewer blob.
"I looked at it and I looked at my supervisor and I was trying to figure out which one was the ugliest (laughs).
But Greensboro neighbors can rest assured. Pegram said to his knowledge nothing like the sewer blob is lurking in the city's 1,500 miles of pipes.
Pegram said the biggest problem in Greensboro is tree roots breaking through sewer pipes and blocking water. Pegram said in such cases, ground worms living in tree roots will get into the pipes.
