GREENSBORO N.C. (WGHP) -
A Greensboro family will swim Alcatraz later this month to help raise money for cancer research.
The Gibson Family has been raising money for cancer research through the Swim for Cancer program sponsored by the Greensboro's Community Swim Association club. The boys, Alex and Andrew, have raised money by earning donations by swimming pool laps.
Earlier this year, the Gibson family lost their grandfather, John Elvin, to cancer. After the loss, the family decided to take part in The Alcatraz Challenge.
The event will be held in San Francisco the week of July 18th. The Alcatraz Challenge is an Aquathlon where participants swim 1.5 miles in the San Francisco Bay and run 7 miles across the Golden Gate Bridge. Alex and his father Derek will swim the 1.5 miles while Andrew and Christie will run the 7 mile-portion of the challenge.
Alex attends Northwest High School and Andrew goes to Kernodle Middle School. Andrew gained notoriety around Greensboro for playing the National Anthem at a Greensboro Grasshopper game earlier this year.
