RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -
A senior at Southwestern Randolph High was suspended and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly throwing a sculptor's pick at a seventh-grader while riding the bus home Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, 18-year-old Jeremy Johnson threw the pottery tool at a 12-year-old female after an argument between the two. The pick hit the girl, a student at Southwestern Middle, on her top lip.
The sheriff's office said the pick had to be surgically removed from the girl's lip. She received stitches at Randolph Hospital and was kept overnight. She's expected to return to school Monday.
Dremia Meier, a school district spokesperson, said the sheriff's department will handle Johnson's case.
"He has been removed from school. We turned the investigation over to the sheriff's department. We will work hand in hand with them to determine what actions should be taken by the school." Meier said.
According to Meier the bus driver did not call 911 as soon as she should have. Meier said the injured girl went home before 911 was called. School policy says a bus driver is supposed to stop immediately and report the incident if a student is injured on the bus.
The female bus driver has been employed for 10 years with no incidence. She is on administrative leave pending investigation.
Johnson, of 6131 Lowdermilk Country Lane in Seagrove, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was jailed under a $100,000 secured bond and made his first court appearance Wednesday.
The sheriff's office said Johnson took the pottery tool from the school without the teacher's knowledge.
Buses service both the high school and middle school, which is why the senior and seventh-grader were on the bus at the same time.
The names of the girl and the bus driver have not been released.
