The Hamilton Lakes Swim and Tennis Club recently dug a well in order to cut costs on the 2.75 million gallons of city water it had been using each year.

"We ended up with a very successful well -- around 35 gallons a minute -- and that was able to then allow us to use it for watering the tennis courts and filling our swimming pool," said Rick Cockroft, the vice president of the club's board.

The club already had a permit to dig the well, and the cost to install it was about $30,000.

Board members estimate the well will save roughly 2 million gallons of city water and could help lower membership fees.

"Our return on investment is somewhere around two years, two and a half years," said Cockroft. "We believe we'll save somewhere around $11,000 to $12,000 over last year."

The club board is also considering a way to capture rain water.
