MEBANE, N.C. -
Tanger Factory Outlets, based in Greensboro, broke ground Thursday, Dec. 10 on a new 317,000 square foot outlet mall in Mebane, N.C. in eastern Alamance County.
The new outlet mall will be located on Arrowhead Boulevard off Interstate 85/40 at the former site of Arrowhead Golf Course. The mall is expected to open in fall 2010.
Steven Tanger, CEO of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc., said he is pleased to open another outlet mall in North Carolina.
"Tanger Outlet Centers has a tremendous confidence in this state and we are proud to join you in North Carolina's economic recovery." Tanger said.
The Alamance Chamber of Commerce expects the mall will provide a substantial economic benefit to the area.
"When you think about the payroll dollars and the retail sales taxes and the property taxes, it's really going to be a tremendous development that's going to pay dividends long beyond today." said Mac Williams, Alamance Chamber of Commerce.
The new Tanger outlet mall is also expected to add 300 construction jobs and 800 permanent retail jobs to the area once construction is complete.
With a projected 80,000 shoppers a week, the center is expected to pump an additional $7.2 million into local and state tax coffers and that could grow as complimentary businesses open nearby.
"As soon as the announcement was made that Tanger was coming to Mebane, we had people inquiring about locations here, so you are real catalyst for our business community." said Glendel Stephenson, Mebane Mayor.
Tanger now has 33 outlet centers in 22 states that draw 155 million shoppers a year.
