A Parkland High School teacher was arrested Friday on charges of sexual misconduct with a student.

Steven Kennard Waddell, 42, of 6025 Dustin Ridge Ct., was charged with taking indecent liberties with a student and sexual battery for an alleged incident with a female student on school grounds, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said the student claims Waddell touched her breast inappropriately Thursday. A school administrator reported the incident to the sheriff's office immediately.

Waddell remains employed as a computer technology teacher at Parkland pending administrative action by the school board, the sheriff's office said. According to a spokesman for Forsyth County Schools, the superintendent will meet with Waddell on Monday and suspend him without pay.

Waddell was hired by the school system in 1994 as a custodian in the central office. He worked his way up and was hired as a teacher at Parkland in 2004, the spokesman said.

Waddell was arrested Friday and jailed under a $100,000 bond. He's scheduled to appear in court May 14.

A recent background check on all school employees did not turn anything up, the school spokesman said. The sheriff's office said the incident appears to be isolated and does not involve other students.
