BURLINGTON, N.C. - Many drivers headed home Sunday after a long Thanksgiving weekend. Yet some drivers said holiday travel around the Piedmont was smoother than they expected.

Drivers at the rest stop on Interstate 85/40 in Burlington all had different travel plans, but most agreed that traffic could have been worse.

"It's been heavy, but it's not been bad" said driver Jim Gulick.

Cheryl Connelly and her family are coming from Morganton and driving to Goldsboro, and she said construction barrels here and there was the only thing that got in her way.

"We left home about three hours ago, and there's been just a few slow spots. But other than that it's been pretty smooth sailing." Connelly said.

Travel wasn't as smooth for driver Paul Frizzelle. He had to detour in Tennessee due to a road closure. Frizelle says patience is important when traveling during the holiday season.

"We do this every year. Probably a little bit more traffic this year because I judge it by the way they bunch up." Frizelle said.

Drivers who still have to travel this weekend are encouraged to take it slow.
