THOMASVILLE, N.C. -
The father of an 11-month-old girl who, according to police, was severely abused by her mother's boyfriend says his daughter is improving and is expected to come home from the hospital Friday.
Thomasville police said Jade Robertson was slammed onto a concrete floor last month by Jeremy Jordan, the boyfriend of the baby girl's mother, Shanda Robinson.
Jade was originally taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in critical condition, but has since been transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte.
"She's happy. She's laughing. They have her talking. She tries to crawl on her own now," said Justin Robertson, Jade's father, on Wednesday.
"They told me that, apparently, her mother's live-in boyfriend slammed her into a concrete floor, and then they said he stuck her in a bathtub full of water and then called EMS and told them she had drowned," he said.
Jade suffered two skull fractures, several broken bones and a third-degree burn on her back and upper legs.
Jordan was jailed in the Davidson County Jail under a $500,000 bond. He faces charges of felonious intentional child abuse and felonious assault with a deadly weapon. Robinson is also charged with felonious child abuse and was jailed under a $250,000 bond.
"It's been rough. She started out in ICU, then the first three times they moved her from ICU to the regular floor, she would have seizures and had to be put back in ICU," he said.
Robertson said he doesn't know Jordan, but he wonders how many other times his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend hurt his daughter.
"You can tell a difference. When she is around females, she's fine, but if she gets around males, she is kind of skittish. The doctors say she could remember what happened," he said.
After Jordan and the girl's mother were arrested, Robertson got temporary custody of Jade and her 11-month-old twin brother, Axle.
"Child Protective Services gave me custody, and then CPS had me take out a restraining order on her in case she got out of jail, so she wouldn't come around them or anything," Robertson said.
Jade is expected to come home from the hospital Friday, and Robertson said he can't wait to hold her and let her get reacquainted with her brother.
