GREENSBORO N.C. - The attraction of an Apple Store far exceeds that of the traditional tech-savvy person.

"The best thing for us is to see the people outside," said store manager Dave Arnold.

The store in the Friendly Shopping Center opened its doors at 10 a.m. Hundreds lined up Saturday morning to be among the first in the Piedmont to look inside the retail home base for iPods, PowerBooks and anything with Mac DNA.

Ian Meyer waited for 16 hours, just to be first in line.

"It's so much fun," said Meyer. "The energy inside, the energy outside, it's a sight to behold."

But Meyer's not there to buy anything.

"I'm broke. I don't have a job. I'm just here for the experience."

Employees inside the store handled the crowd that seemed more interested in looking than purchasing. Arnold believes the excitement will eventually turn into sales. So do the Apple Store's neighbors, like Williams Sonoma next door.

"Our demographics are kind of the same so we're hope, well, we will get more traffic, and our sales will increase," said Beka Leonard, store coordinator. "Apple just has a great following. People are going to drive from all over just to come to that store.

The new Apple Store is also delivering new jobs. Arnold said they've hired more than 50 employees.

In North Carolina, Apple owns stores in Charlotte, Durham and Raleigh.
