The puppy found burned and severely wounded is doing much better, according to the woman who is taking care of the dog during its recovery period.

Susie, a 12-week-old shepherd mix, was found last week at Greenfield Park, where someone had set her on fire, broke her jaw and left her for dead. Her body was charred and her wounds were full of maggots, and it's thought she had been suffering in the park for two weeks.

"The first time I touched her, she would start wagging her tail right away," said Roberta Wall, who is serving as Susie's foster mom until a permanent home can be found. "By the next day, she would change a lot. Not just a little, but a lot."

Every day, Wall brings Susie in for a daily checkup so veterinarian technicians at the Guilford County Animal Shelter check and clean her wounds.
