PINNACLE, N.C.—
A 5-year-old boy was severely injured when five of his family's dogs attacked him as an adult fed the dogs Friday afternoon.According to Claude Daniel Childress, the boy's grandfather, the boy suffered wounds to his face, neck, shoulders and chest. The injuries left him in critical condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Surry County EMS workers were called to the family's home on Hill Billy Ln., near Pilot Mountain, around 3:30 p.m.
Detectives said an adult was feeding five of the dogs when the boy got into the fenced area. Animal control officers said 20 to 30 Rottweilers live on the property.
"He don't need all them dogs. Not one bit," said Childress, who said he'd never seen the dogs attack anyone before but admitted never feeling comfortable seeing dozens of Rottweilers next door.
"I wouldn't care if they took them all," he said.
There's a possibility animal control officers could remove the dogs from the property. They've been out in the past to check loose dogs for rabies.
The five dogs that attacked the boy are now at the Surry County Animal Shelter for a 10-day quarantine.
"That will give us time to get all the pieces together in the investigation and make appropriate action," said Bobby Gallimore, the Surry County Animal Control director.
