Dell Inc., which announced earlier this month plans to close its Winston-Salem desktop manufacturing plant, confirmed in writing to the city Thursday it will pay back $26.5 million in local incentives used to lure the company to Forsyth County.
In a letter from Dell to Mayor Allen Joines, the computer manufacturer said it would repay the money within 30 days of receiving a formal letter from the city upon the plant's closing. The plant is expected to be completed in January 2010.
The breakdown of repayment is as follows:
City of Winston-Salem -- $15,556,000
County of Forsyth -- $7,916,000
Millenium Fund -- 2,774,000
Forsyth County Development Commission -- $308,000
Approximately 905 employees will be affected by the closure, with about 600 to be released next month, the company said.
