GREENSBORO, N.C.—
If you've read Web sites or watched TV news this week, Dennis Hayle's name has usually been followed by the words 'murder victim.'To the many people he knew while attending North Carolina A&T State University, he was a friend, fraternity brother and student leader. His familiar face and large smile made a lasting impression among thousands on the Greensboro campus.
A group of communication students asked Hayle to be a part of a series on campus life. His interview was part of the memorial service.
"He loved this institution, the soil it sits on," said Chancellor Stanley Battle. "He even loved the buildings."
Mayor Yvonne Johnson offered the city's condolences at the service.
In a video to the student body, the victim's mother had strong words for her son's killer.
"You may have taken my son's body but you will never take his soul," said Stephanie Hayle.
Funeral services for Dennis Hayle will be held in his native New York state.
