Two people were killed in a three-vehicle accident along Highway 64 near the Randolph-Davidson county line, according to the state highway patrol.
Authorities say it appears an El Camino was traveling down Highway 64 toward Randolph County blew a tire near Misty Lane and crossed the center line. A Snider Tire truck traveling toward Davidson County attempted to avoid the El Camino, but couldn't avoid hitting the vehicle.
The impact of the crash sent the truck into oncoming traffic where it struck an older model Ford head on killing 70-year-old James Clarence Poe and his wife, Elizabeth Poe.
According to authorities, the El Camino and cargo truck belong to Snider Tire in Greensboro.
The driver of the truck, Jarrel Snody, was airlifted to a nearby hospital. As of Tuesday night, hospital officials said he was talking. He does not have any life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the El Camino appeared to be OK.
Police said it is possible that heat was a factor in causing the tire on the El Camino to blow. Police said they will check to make sure the vehicle's maintenance services were up to date. The DA's office will decide if any charges will be filed in the accident.
