The meeting, which is being hosted by state Rep. Nick Mackey of Mecklenburg County, will be held at UNC Charlotte. Mackey and Rep. Kelly Alexander Jr., both Democrats, are co-sponsoring a bill that would make medical marijuana legal in North Carolina.

Jones is the bill's chief sponsor.

The bill would "legalize marijuana use for people diagnosed with debilitating conditions including cancer, glaucoma, rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis," the newspaper reported.

The bill is currently in the House Committee on Health, but sponsors hope to move ahead once the General Assembly reconvenes in May. If enacted, it would make North Carolina the 15th state to legalize medical marijuana.
