Embattled Pace Airlines CEO William C. Rodgers was released from jail late Tuesday night after being arrested on charges of knowingly canceling health insurance for employees.

Rodgers was arrested at Piedmont Triad International Airport Tuesday afternoon by investigators with the N.C. Department of Insurance, the NCDOI said Tuesday.

Investigators said Rodgers knowingly canceled his employee group health insurance without providing the required 45-day notice to his 337 employees. Rodgers is charged with one count of willful failure to pay group health insurance premiums, the Dept. of Insurance said.

Rodgers posted $50,000 bond late Tuesday night. Rodgers declined comment as he left the jail.

Additional charges are pending, and investigators from the department's criminal investigations division are still seeking information from Pace employees, the DOI said.

Rodgers was arrested at the airport Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Forsyth County Magistrate's Office for processing.

An informational meeting for Pace employees scheduled for Sept. 29 was canceled Wednesday afternoon. More information can be found at the NCDOI's Web site.

At the meeting, employees that were affected by the insurance cuts will be asked to fill out a form stating how they were affected by the canceling of health insurance. For every form that is filled out by an employee, Rodgers could face additional charges.

If every employee attends the meeting and fills out the form, he could face up to 400 additional charges.

Last week, the charter airline company advised the Federal Aviation Administration it had temporarily ceased operations at its headquarters at Smith Reynolds Airport.

The previous week, according to a memo to employees, Pace executives laid off all nonessential personnel. According to company executives, the reduction affected between 75 and 100 employees. Those cuts were in addition to earlier layoffs that affected up to 200 people.

For weeks, employees had complained of not receiving paychecks and the company not paying their health insurance.
