STOKESDALE, N.C. -
For the past two days, a small herd of pigs has been roaming free near Stokesdale Elementary School.
Principal Amy Koonce said the five pigs were first noticed on campus Monday. For the past two days, she hasn't allowed students outside for recess.
Koonce said the pigs keep running to a wooded area near school and tend to re-emerge when the campus gets quiet.
"Right now, we can't take our children on the playground," said Mrs. Yvonne Lee, a 2nd grade teacher at Stokesdale Elementary.
Principal Koonce said she contact the sheriff's department and they have come out and taken a look. However, animal control officers couldn't get close enough to the pigs to catch them.
While FOX8 was at the school on Tuesday, the pigs came out of the woods and began digging in the yard beside the school.

When the sheriff deputy arrived at the school, the pigs had already left the school.
Animal Control will be at the school with traps on Wednesday hoping to catch the pigs.
