Two executives with Winston-Salem-based Southern Community Bank were injured when their plane crashed in western North Carolina late Tuesday afternoon, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.

According to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac, the small plane crashed while trying to make an emergency landing near the intersection of Upper Brush Creek and Bethany Church roads in Fairview, N.C., southeast of Asheville.

Salac said the plane's single engine failed at an altitude of about 8,000 feet and the pilot attempted to land in a cornfield. During the landing, the plane clipped a tree and flipped over.

Salac said the crash happened just before 5:30 p.m.

The sheriff's office said the two people on board were James Monroe and James Hastings. Monroe is the registered owner of the plane.

According to WLOS-TV, both men were in serious but stable condition at a nearby hospital.

Southern Community Bank's website lists Monroe as senior vice president and treasurer and Hastings as executive vice president and chief financial officer.

The aircraft, a Mooney M20C, is a single-engine craft that seats four.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported both people were taken from the scene by medical helicopter.

According to the FAA, the flight departed from Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem on Tuesday afternoon.
