GIBSONVILLE, N.C. -
A 20-year-old Marine from Gibsonville was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday.
"I'm afraid to close my eyes, the picture the explosion, my boy!"
Elaine Hager shares her heartbreak hours after learning her 20-year-old son, Marine Lance Cpl. Roger Hager, was killed during his first tour of duty in Afghanistan.
"He just had a personality everybody loved. There was nobody that hated him," said Elaine Hager.
Hager was assigned to the 2nd Recon. Battalion, 2nd Marine Division.
The Pentagon said explosives hit his vehicle as he was traveling through the Helmond Province Wednesday in a four-vehicle convoy. According to the Marines, Roger died instantly.
"He fought for this country and I was so proud of him."
Roger was a 2008 graduate of Western Alamance High School. Once he had his diploma, his mother said her son enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. The middle child of three, his older brother and younger sister are also in the military.
Hager's body will be brought back to the U.S. on Friday for an autopsy. The family will receive the body on Sunday or Monday.
