WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A 14-year-old boy was killed while riding a bicycle on U.S Highway 311 near Union Cross Road early Sunday morning, according to Winston-Salem police.

A woman driving a car southbound on 311 collided with the bicycle and the rider. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Mark Zanzarella, 14, of Clemmons (picture courtesy Winston-Salem Journal).

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Zanzarella was supposed to move to his father's home in Putnam Valley, New York on Sunday.

Instead, relatives and neighbors said he was on his sister's bicycle, riding to visit a girl he reportedly knew online before leaving North Carolina. The Journal reports directions to her house were found in his pocket.

His mother, Earlene Jones, said she had gone to bed around 10 p.m. Saturday and didn't know until Sunday Zanzarella had left home.

The accident happened about 16 miles from his mother's home.

The accident happened shortly after 3 a.m. Police said the driver of the car was Angelica Rincon, 18 of Asheboro. It is not clear whether the bicycle rider was also traveling southbound on U.S. 311 or was crossing the roadway.

Police are also looking for the driver of a red pickup truck who reportedly stopped to help. Investigators said they believe the truck driver saw the accident, but was not involved in the crash.
