RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. - The SBI continues to investigate a shootout and chase between deputies and alleged robbery suspects in Randolph County.

The incident started around 9 p.m. Tuesday night when the BP at Business 220 and Providence Church Road was robbed.

A cashier at the BP told police two armed men wearing ski masks robbed the gas station and drove off in a white Buick. According to the cashier, the men were heading towards Randleman.

Randolph County sheriff's deputy Chad Oates, 34, began to pursue the vehicle, which resulted in a short chase. The suspects later stopped the car on Wicker Lovell Road near Loflin Pond Road.

The suspects began to open fire on the deputy and according to police, the deputy returned fire. Deputy Oates was not hit by any of the shots.

Following the shootout, the deputy's car was disabled and the suspects' ran off. The deputy called in the vehicle's tag to the Sheriff's Office and deputies were able to trace the car's license plate to a home on Spoons Chapel Church Road.

When police arrived at the home, deputies found one suspect dead inside the car. He was later identified as Maxwell Jackson Ellison, 51, of Asheboro.

A second suspect is still on the loose, although investigators said they expect an arrest shortly.

Police said the suspects' vehicle matched the description of a vehicle used in several recent robberies.
